Yamaha DM7 training

A really great part of working for Ultra Events is being exposed to training and product showcases.

I was blessed to attend the Yamaha DM7 live console launch and training hosted by Stage Audio Works.

The training was held at Hillsong Church in Century City, a beautiful modern church that is fully equipped.

They have tech for services, performances, streaming, and presentation sessions.

The importance of training:

The live events scene is constantly evolving and changing.

Staying up to date with the latest tech on the market ensures that you don’t get left behind.

When you get an opportunity to learn about a new product or protocol, I believe you should jump at it.

Being exposed to the latest products allows you to do further research and familiarise yourself with new innovations.

The people giving the presentations are usually veterans of the field, having worked or currently working at the top of their game.

This was the case with the DM7 training I attended.

Meet the Presenter: Olli Voges (Sound Designer & Front of House Engineer)

Olli Voges, with an audio engineering degree since 1994, began his musical journey at 11 and has toured globally with renowned artists like Faith No More, Deftones, David Copperfield and Sarah Brightman.

Olli co-founded the Sennheiser Live Mixing Workshop in 2003 and has since been a key team member.

In recent years, he has focused on sound design for live stages, with notable projects like the Red Bull Symphony and Casper’s home stadium performance in Bielefeld, Germany.

The training:

Olli started the training by running through the features of the Yamaha DM7 console, listing all the features, available processing and so on.

Every aspect of the console was comprehensively covered, giving use cases and situations where the processing and workflow would be beneficial.

Every aspect of the console, from patching to output grouping and processing was touched on.

After the formal presentation, we huddled around the console to get a closer look at the interface and a first-hand demonstration of the workflow.

The training concluded with a "virtual sound check"

This used multitracks fed through the USB-C interface to the console, with all of the attendees encouraged to grab the faders and make some EQ moves.

Any questions that arose during the training were answered with wit and wisdom by Olli.

Networking

An often undercooked part of these training sessions is the ability to network and meet other professionals in the live events scene.

Seeing familiar faces, and meeting new people, is a great way to strengthen relationships that will last your entire career.

It was an absolute pleasure to see all the familiar faces from the industry all in one place.

It was also a great honour to spend some time with the fine folks at Stage Audio Works.

Thank you everyone, until the next one.
